You'll discover that tap dancing offers so much more than just fun—it's a complete workout for your body, mind, and spirit.
Meet Your Instructor: Angie Brown
With over three decades of dance experience, Angie brings both expertise and enthusiasm to every class. She has taught at several dance studios and fitness centers throughout the Spokane area and currently teaches all of our children's tap classes at Sandra's Studio of Dance. Her teaching style is patient, encouraging, and perfectly suited for adult learners who want to challenge themselves while having a great time.
Angie understands that adults come to tap dance with different goals, backgrounds, and comfort levels. Her approach ensures that everyone—from nervous beginners to returning dancers—feels welcome, supported, and appropriately challenged.
The Amazing Health Benefits of Tap Dancing
Tap dancing isn't just fun—it's one of the best activities you can do for your overall health and wellness:
Physical Fitness Benefits
Cardiovascular workout that gets your heart pumping without feeling like traditional exercise
Low-impact exercise that's easier on joints than running or HIIT
Improved balance and coordination through complex foot and body movements
Enhanced leg and core strength from the constant movement and control required
Better posture and alignment developed through proper tap technique
Bone Health and Osteoporosis Prevention
Tap dancing is particularly beneficial for bone health. The impact of your feet hitting the floor provides the weight-bearing exercise that helps maintain bone density and can help prevent osteoporosis—especially important for adults over 40.
Brain Health and Cognitive Benefits
Enhanced memory from learning step combinations and choreography
Improved focus and concentration required to coordinate complex movements
Increased neuroplasticity as your brain creates new neural pathways
Better multitasking abilities developed through coordinating rhythm, movement, and music
Stress relief through the meditative quality of rhythmic movement
Mental Health and Social Benefits
Stress reduction through physical activity and creative expression
Increased confidence as you master new skills and combinations
Social connection with other adults in a supportive, fun environment
Pure joy from the playful, musical nature of tap dancing
Sense of accomplishment from learning this unique and challenging art form
What to Expect in Class
Our adult tap classes are structured to maximize learning while ensuring everyone feels comfortable and challenged at their appropriate level:
Warm-Up (10 minutes): We start every class with gentle stretches and basic movements to prepare your body for dancing. This helps prevent injury and gets everyone focused and ready to learn.
Basic Steps and Combinations (10 minutes): Whether you're learning your first shuffle or perfecting your time steps, we spend significant time on fundamentals. Newcomers will learn the essential tap sounds and basic steps, while more experienced dancers will have opportunities to refine their technique and add complexity when they're ready.
Across the Floor (15 minutes): We practice traveling steps and combinations, moving across the studio space. This portion builds confidence in movement while working on different rhythmic patterns and step combinations.
Choreography (20 minutes): We work on short choreographed sequences that bring together everything we've learned. Don't worry—these are designed to be achievable and fun, not performance-ready! It's all about putting the pieces together and enjoying the music.
Cool-Down and Stretches (5 minutes): We end each class with relaxing stretches at the barre to help prevent soreness and maintain flexibility.

What You'll Need
Footwear: Tap shoes are ideal, but not required for your first few classes. You can start in hard-soled shoes (like dress shoes or character shoes) to see if you enjoy tap before investing in proper tap shoes. We're happy to recommend where to purchase quality beginner tap shoes.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. Avoid loose pants that might catch on your feet—fitted workout clothes or jeans work well.
Water: Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the class.
Positive Attitude: Come ready to laugh, learn, and maybe make some mistakes—it's all part of the fun!

Addressing Common Concerns
"I'm not coordinated enough." Coordination is something you develop, not something you're born with. Tap dancing actually improves coordination through practice, and everyone starts at their own level.
"I'm too old to start dancing." There's no age limit on learning something new! We've had students start tap dancing in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. Your body and brain benefit from new challenges at any age.
"I'll feel self-conscious." Everyone in adult classes understands the feeling of trying something new. Our supportive environment and Angie's encouraging teaching style help students feel comfortable from day one.
"I'm not musical." You don't need to come to class with rhythm—you'll develop it! Tap dancing actually helps you become more musical by literally feeling the beat through your feet.
